 Modern Rifles

These are weapons that really exist, run through FF&S. This means that some of their stats are not in fact correct. I plugged in the correct barrel length, magazine capacity and cartridge statistics and went from there.

AN-94

The AN-94 is the latest Russian assault rifle, and it is intended that it will replace the AK-74 in service as money becomes availible. It is rated by Jane's Infantry Weapons 1998-99 as the most advanced infantry rifle in service, thus placing it as mid to late TL8 (depending on your view of our current tech level). Like the now defunct G11 (the most advanced infantry rifle made to this point) the AN-94 has a three round burst system that gives a much higher than cyclic rate of fire for the burst. In the AN-94's case the ROF for the burst is 1800 rpm. As a result when firing three round bursts the first burst is not effected by recoil modifiers, although its recoil is still counted when determining the recoil penalty for any other bursts fired during the round. Add an extra Cr150 to the weapon price and 0.1kg to all weights to add the optional optical sight.

Weapon Type:         TL-8 light self-loading longarm
Ammunition:          5.45x39mm TL-7 necked
Muzzle Energy:       1383 joules (Tranq: 830 joules)
Weapon Length:       94.3 cm, 74.3 cm folded

Weapon Price:        Cr864
Magazine Weight:     0.459 kg loaded, 0.186 kg empty (30 rnds), 0.6775 kg loaded,
0.268 kg empty (45 rnds), 0.895 kg loaded, 0.349 kg empty (60 rnds)
Magazine Price:      Cr2 (30-round box), Cr3 (45-round box), Cr4 (60-round box)
Ammunition Price:    Cr0.18 (Ball), Cr0.36 (DS, HE, Tranq), Cr0.54 (HEAP)
Ammunition Weight:   9.1 grams per round
Features:            Folding stock, iron sight, long muzzle brake, bayonet lug.

Note that only the ball round is produced today. I've put the other rounds up in case anyone wants to use the AN-94 with other ammo types in their game.

G11

The most advanced infantry rifle made to date, the G11 fires a caseless round using a unique revolving action. I've rated the G11 as a TL9 design, as it uses caseless ammunition which indicates late TL8 or early TL9, and FF&S gives quite a big efficiency jump in muzzle energy that is IMO consistent with the use of caseless ammo. Like the AN-94 the G11 has a very high rate of fire in three round burst mode and thus when firing three round bursts the first burst is not effected by recoil modifiers, although its recoil is still counted when determining the recoil penalty for any other bursts fired during the round.

PTRS-41

I think this weapon is the real world rifle that the Crunch gun is based on, though there was another weapon that fired the same round, and was semi-automatic. This was originally intended as an anti-tank rifle, but shortly became obsolete in that role, however it proved very useful in both Korea and Vietnam as a very long range snipers' rifle. The modern US .50 BMG sniper weapons are a more modern equivalent (though the .50 BMG round is older than the 14.5mm KPV round that the PTRS-41 uses).

I have used the DS round to represent the tungsten cored AP rounds fired by the PTRS-41. It would probably be more realistic to use the Ball round's range ratings, and a penetration rating of say: 1-2-3 (AP rounds in rifles tend to lose energy faster than ball rounds).

Weapon Type:        TL6 single shot longarm

SMLE

The .303 Lee-Enfield used by the British and their allies in both World Wars and representative of a good TL4 military rifle. The long range of this and other similar rifles means that with the addition of a telescopic sight they make good snipers' rifles, even at higher Tech Levels.

Springfield .30-06

The US equivalent of the SMLE. A comparison of the Springfield and the SMLE shows how little real difference there was between many of the service rifles of the time. Comparing the M-16A2 and the AKMS-74 shows the same thing.

Smokeless, ETC & Gauss Rifles

Solomani Confederation Designs

These weapons were designed to fill a gap in the published TNE material - no Solomani small arms were ever published. I had chosen to design most at TL13 because the Solomani Confederation has always been portrayed as being about one tech level behind the Third Imperium, and most of the Imperium's line equipment is TL14 in ~1100, however after some discussion on the TNE-RCES mailing list I have redesigned them at TL-14 because of the Confederation's higher average Tech Level. If anyone wants the older designs they can email me.

RGSL-14 (Rifle, Gauss, Sniper, Light, TL14)

This weapon is the reason I chose a 5mm standard. 5mm is the smallest dart dia that will give a SR of 300m, or to look at it another way at 6000 m/s anything bigger than 5mm would've been a waste. The weight of 15.83 kg is a little heavy, but compared to the 13mm sniper rifle in the RCEG at 28.9 kg, or the Crunch Gun at 53.787 kg it's a lightweight. Penetration is the same as the 13mm and better than a Crunch Gun without  specialty ammo.

Weapon Type:         TL-14 semi-automatic longarm
Ammunition:          5x25mm/60 gauss dart
Muzzle Energy:       17640 joules, required energy: 28224 joules

RGAL-14 (Rifle, Gauss, Assault, TL14)

This is the standard issue assault rifle for non-Battle Dress troops. With the DS round it is capable of penetration all personal armour except TL12+ Battle Dress, and has a good range and low recoil making it easy for troops to use. On the downside the ammunition is a little on the heavy side, though overall the weapon plus 240 rounds of ammo is only about 11 kg - less than any comparable weapon.

Weapon Type:         TL-14 selective fire longarm
Ammunition:          5x25mm/31.9 gauss dart
