The first Traveller is now called Classic Traveller (CT) and came out as three half sized books, the Little Black Books that are highly sort after by those who don't have them, like me. CT was set in a huge empire, the Third Imperium, that had lasted over a thousand years and, some say, could last a thousand more.
After many supplements and rules variations came out Traveller was re-written as Mega Traveller (MT). MT moved the time-line forward, killing the Emperor and splitting the Imperium into many factions, all fighting over the throne.
In the early '90s the then publishers, GDW (now sadly gone), decided to give Traveller a shot in the arm. They used the system from another of their games, TW:2000, and advanced the timeline another 70 years. The Imperium has gone, along with tens of billions of its own citizens, destroyed by a secret weapon - Virus. Virus is a sentient computer virus that can re-configure itself to any computer it encounters, and is generally a homicidal maniac. However it is now The New Era, and civilization is climbing out of the rubble where has been hiding for the past 70 years.
Unfortunately GDW shut up shop in 1995. The rights reverted to Marc Miller, who licensed Imperium Games to publish a new version of Traveller - Marc Miller's Traveller, or T4. T4 is so far only set in Melieu Zero, the founding of the Third Imperium. Mr Miller also licensed Steve Jackson Games to produce a Traveller supplement for their game GURPS. This supplement is to be set in an alternative universe where the events of Mega Traveller and The New Era never happened. Time well tell whether this is a good idea, however it looks like Imperium Games has gone down the tubes and Traveller is looking for a home again, so GURPS: Traveller could be it's salvation (or its perdition).
