Winter Competition 2005

The Winter competition allows interested players the opportunity to play a few organised games over the winter months. It also allows new players to obtain a taste of competitive play, and provides an opporunity for a number of players to represent their club.

While there is some debate whether the competition should be held in 2006, it has been successful in introducing a large number of players to events outside their own club.

2005 Winter Competition

The format of the 2005 competition is for four rounds of doubles.

The dates and venues are:
Round 1 - Sunday 1 May - Venue is Park Avenue
Round 2 - Sunday 29 May - Venue is Kapiti
Round 3 - Sunday 26 June - Venue is Kapiti
Round 4 - Sunday 24 July - Venue is Park Avenue

Note: Due to bad weather, Round 3 was postponed to 24 July at Park Avenue. Round 4 was re-scheduled to 7 August.

Eligibility
  1. All players must be members of a club affiliated to the Wellington Pétanque Association.
  2. Where a player is a member of more than one club, the player may only represent one club in the Winter Doubles.
  3. Reserves are permitted to ensure that a team can continue to compete. However, at least one member of the original registered team must play. Any reserves must be registered no later than 30 minutes before play begins.
Playing format
  1. The teams will be divided into pools of six and each team will play 5 games per day.
  2. For rounds 1, 2 and 3 a staggered draw based on seeding will be made for the pools. For the final round the teams will be ranked in order of wins, followed by points differential and assigned to the pools in descending order.
  3. The intention is to start play around 10:00am and conclude by 4:00pm.
  4. Where practical players/teams will not compete against members of their own club.
Trophies
  1. The Winter Doubles Trophy will be awarded to the club with the best average result at the end of the competition. The average will be based on number of wins divided by number of teams.
  2. Prizes will be awarded to each pool winner in the final round.
