Lucy Ruth Howkins - 1866 - 1919

Lucy Ruth Howkins was christened in Ardley, Oxfordshire on 11 April 1866. On 20 February 1889 she married Thomas James Harrison, a widower, at his home in Hamilton Bay.

The marriage certificate states that Thos Jas Harrison was aged 29, occupation Butcher, widower, birthplace looks like Wallingham, Norfolk, England.
Residence Hamilton Bay, fathers name John W Harrison, farmer, and mothers name Elizabeth Ann Cole.
Lucy Ruth Hawkins was aged 23, spinster, birthplace Ardly [spelling on certificate], Oxfordshire, England, residence Sawyers Bay. Fathers name Rich Hawkins, farmer and mothers name Dinah Butler. Both Thomas and Lucy signed their names and witnesses were John William Harrison, Sawyers Bay, Butcher, and Emily Olive Harrison, Sawyers Bay.

Thomas married [1] Mary Thomas Moyle 13 March 1881 Port Chalmers, Mary died 4 November 1888. [2] Lucy Ruth Howkins, [3] Esther Ann Smith 1929. There were at least four children born to Thomas and Mary.

The Harrison family of Port Chalmers operated Harrison's Butchery in George Street Port Chalmers for many years and the shop was also the site of the first freezer for shipments of frozen sheep for Britain [February 1882].

Lucy died in Port Chalmers 24 June 1919 and is buried Port Chalmers Upper Oval Plot 108.

1.George Richard Harrison.

2.Lucy Ruth Harrison.
Born 1890, married John Fairweather Hutton 1915. John's occupation 1938 was patternmaker, residence 1938-1949 was 33 Mechanic Street, Dunedin. He died 9 July 1941 buried Port Chalmers 11 July 1941.

3. Emily Olive Harrison.
Born 1893, married Francis Herbert McMaster 1922

4.Ethel May Harrison.
Born Hamilton Bay, Port Chalmers 24 November 1899. Married Brian George Edward Robinson at Holy Trinity Church Port Chalmers 21 July 1920. Brian born Oamaru 1891 son of Augustus George Robinson, auditor, and Marion nee Atkinson. Occupation at time of marriage Electrical Engineer.

5.Myrtle Amelia Harrison.
Born 13 March 1902, married Herbert Attwood Booth at Holy Trinity Church Port Chalmers 25 June 1925. Herbert born Dunedin 1900 son of George Frederick Booth, rector of District High School, and Mary Alice nee Irwin. Occupation at time of marriage Bank Clerk.

There may be other children of this marriage, there were several Harrison families in the area and it has been difficult to match children to parents.
