Paraparaumu Bridge Club - News & Events
Badges: You can still order a manufactured name badge through the club. The cost is $12. Just put your name and number, and indicate whether you want a magnet or pin clip on the order form on the notice board.
Proprieties: Please read the Do’s and Don’ts in the Programme book-Bridge should be enjoyable for all participants.
Sitting Rights: Some convenors are having problems with seating at sessions because the majority of players wish to sit and are reluctant to move. To try and solve this problem if you require seating rights please put it in writing to the committee, there should be a valid medical reason for the request. Otherwise pairs must toss for position so there is a random distribution in the room.
In case new members are not aware the Minutes of committee meetings, NZ Bridge Newsletters and minutes etc are posted on the notice board by the kitchen hatch.
You are welcome to borrow books and Videos from our Library. There is a simple card system for this.
It is not the Committee’s responsibility to clear up after the tea break. It behoves all members to help out as required.
The Club needs more members to assist as Directors, especially on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Please consider allowing your name to go forward to Pat McArthur who is responsible for drawing up the Directors roster.
New Harcourt's Sponsorship:
If you list and sell your property exclusively with Doug & Jan Palmer or you refer someone who does, $200 will be paid to the Paraparaumu Bridge Club. As a bonus you will also get a dinner for two at a restauarant of your choice.

PARAPARAUMU BRIDGE CLUB NEWSLETTER - march 2010
General
Welcome to the first newsletter of 2010 - with most members having now returned from the holiday/festive season we are beginning to see a build up in session play with 11/12 tables for most, and Friday afternoon achieving 7 tables recently. Members are reminded that Friday afternoon is for a trial period and the Committee will review its support around the middle of the year to determine whether or not it continues.
The Club was delighted to receive another visit recently from 11 members of the Karori Bridge Club, who arrived en masse in a community bus driven by Julia England, a former member of our Club. A splendid day out for the Karori players and a boost to our Thursday day session by 3 tables, with Lois Anderson from our Club, completing the third table.
Tournament Play
The Club’s Open Tournament is being held this year on Sunday 21 March and moderately experienced/experienced members are encouraged to enter. Registration is $24.00, BYO lunch, dinner and drinks provided at end of play. Allan Joseph, who will be known to most members, is the Director for the day. Trilogy travel, tours and shuttles has kindly agreed to sponsor this tournament.
Betty Hollands is in charge of the kitchen support for the day and would appreciate offers of help as follows:
-Plates for morning tea - to be delivered between 9.00-9.30 am.
-Set-up/clear up of morning tea from 9.00 am - 10.00 am.
-Help with lunchtime set up/clearing of paper debris in playing area between 12.30 pm-2.00 pm.
-Help with dinner set-up/clear-up from 4.30 pm to finish.
Please ring Betty and offer whatever assistance you can - your support would be greatly appreciated.
The noticeboard is fast filling up with notices from other Clubs for Junior, Intermediate, Open and Multigrade tournaments - make it your year to give it a go!!
Interclub play
We have a one-off ungraded interclub match with Waikanae Club on the afternoon of Anzac Day, Sunday the 25 April. It is to be held in our clubrooms followed by afternoon tea. We will need 6 teams and pairs are encouraged to enter as soon as the notice goes up towards the end of March. Those selected to play will be notified by about the 12 April.
Subscriptions
Now due and from 1 March 2010 will be $55.00 for the year - still lots outstanding so please make an effort to pay on your next visit to the Club.
Lessons and practice sessions
This year the lessons will take a different form and will be conducted for the first five by Robyn Michelson, beginning 1 March. These will cover basic bidding and play, followed by a 5 week period during which the learners will practise what they have been taught. Robyn would like some volunteers to assist with this part of the programme which will involve Monday evenings from 7.30 pm to around 9.00 pm assisting the learners with their bidding and play - at least one experienced player at each table. If you think you can help, please contact Robyn.
Bridge proprieties/directing
Members are encouraged to refresh their knowledge of the bridge proprieties by reading through the ‘Guide for Members’ and ‘Proprieties’ sections of the Handbook. These cover the basics of good bridge behaviour as well as the role of the Director. Members are particularly requested to co-operate with the Director to ensure the smooth running of the session. Please be seated on time and listen to the Director’s announcements.
Session play kitchen use
Our Club operates seven sessions a week and is presently run on a completely voluntary basis - no mean achievement. It falls to all members to assist wherever possible in keeping the facilities in a clean and tidy condition. We all appreciate the tea and coffee that is made available so please ensure that you ‘do your bit’ in setting up, clearing up and washing up!
