Formed in 1881,the Otago Anglers Association is the oldest
angling club in New Zealand, and possibly Australiasia. The aims and objects of
the club are as spelt out in the rules - "the encouragement of the art of
angling, the fostering of friendship, and emulation amongst anglers by means of
fishing competitions and otherwise, and the obtaining of useful information
regarding the various streams in the district".
Today
the club is thriving and in good heart, with a strong emphasis on family
involvement. Our main interest is in trout fishing, but our activities cover all
types of angling from dangling a line from the wharf, to salmon fishing. We
cater for all types of angler, from the complete novice to the expert, and new
faces are always welcome. We have well appointed clubrooms, fitted with all the
relevant facilities, and these are the focal point of the club, where we hold
all of our weekly meetings, most of the weigh ins, barbecues and various other
social functions.
In addition to the clubrooms, we own five fishing lodges,
which are very popular, and are available to members and families at an
extremely low rental. This can be on bunk only basis, or if privacy is required,
lodges can be rented for exclusive use only.
