Henry Rolls' Journal of Events
FreeCEN is an ambitious internet project, manned entirely by volunteers, with the objective of building an accurate and comprehensive data base of all British census data for the years 1841, 51, 61, 71 and 91. This data base is now freely accessible via the internet, providing a high quality, invaluable tool for researchers. There are currently over 400,000 Welsh entries with thousands more added each month. We urgently need more volunteers to help us make faster progress with the project. To find out more about volunteering see below.
This page is undergoing development - 8 Aug 2008
Volunteers
- Transcribers:
- Transcribe the information from the census pages into the FreeCEN spreadsheet which is provided for you. A census piece on CD [1841-1871] or microfiche [1891] is provided on loan. These are loaned to the project by the LDS Church in Utah and we are responsible for their return. Transcribers need only a computer and a little free time. We will provide the software you need, instructions and tips for transcribers, a Helpers List and a coordinator you can contact with any problems or concerns. FreeCEN transcribers record what is actually written in the census, including spelling mistakes and bad geography. Once a volunteer has decided to help we can then set about allocating a census piece taking into consideration any expressed preference to a particular area of Wales. Not all Welsh counties have projects as yet but we can usually work out something. If you are interested in a county without listed projects it is worth asking.
Ideally each county has its own coordinator and he/she will also assist you with guidance and advice but a number of Welsh counties are without County Coordinators at present and the Wales Coordinator is managing those projects until one is found.
There is no time limit but we encourage transcribers to do little and often. If circumstances change transcribers should have no hesitation in packing up the CD/fiche and as much as they have done and sending it straight back to the coordinator. It is absolutely crucial that the CD or fiche is returned. If you are interested in seeing a sample spreadsheet there is one here.
- Checkers:
- Completed transcripts are converted by the coordinator into data files and each entry is then checked against the original images by a checker using purpose built FreeCEN software. Any necessary corrections are made. Checking is much faster than transcription and for that reason is popular with some people. Currently most projects have a sizeable backlog of pieces waiting for checking as we have a critical shortage of checkers. Checkers should be familiar with the handwriting of the time, and in the case of Wales, some familiarity also with Welsh place names. Ll can look like H or St, and u looks much like n. You do not need to be able to understand or speak Welsh.
- Coordinators:
- Coordinators are responsible for a single project [one census year of a large county] or a whole county or counties. A large county may have a number of coordinators working with the County Coordinator. County coordinators should be familiar with the area and willing to do some promotion of their project where possible. They have the fiche or CD copies to send out to transcribers; they respond to queries from transcribers on that team; they tidy up and convert the finished transcripts ready for checking and arrange a checker. They are also responsible for providing the twice yearly statistics for the LDS Church and the providing regular updates for the FreeCEN Wales tables. A coordinator does not need to be a checker but it is helpful if they can assist. A coordinator can validate the checked files - a relatively simple and easy third step designed to remove as many remaining doubts as possible and add correctly spelled birthplaces so that both the original and the conventional spelling is recorded. Coordinators do not necessarily need a lot of time but do need to be willing to respond to emails within two or three days. Coordinators are fully supported by the Wales Regional Coordinator.

Thanks first to Dewi & Emrys. The first two pieces for 1871 AGY have at last been added to the database. The AGY County Coordinator is Dewi Evans. Transcribers for this county are greatly needed now. Volunteers need only a computer; a census piece CD, all necessary software & support will be supplied by FreeCEN, our supporters, the Anglesey Coordinator and the Wales Coordinator.

Although there are no formal FreeCEN BRE projects just yet, a series of census transcripts for Llandeilo'r Fan have been donated by Kyle Williams. Until they are formatted for the FreeCEN database they can be found here. If anyone has census transcripts they would like to donate or would be interested in transcribing for a FreeCEN BRE project, please contact the Wales Coordinator.

County Coordinator
Thanks go to the CAE transcription team of Elizabeth, Howell, John, Mervyn, Sulwen, Tom and Natalia. Checking of 1891 CAE census pieces continues and we have a desperate need for more volunteers. Volunteers for 1891 need a computer and must have access to a microfiche reader. A limited 1871 project will be launched shortly. Volunteers for this project must be experienced FreeCEN or FreeBMD transcribers. A full launch will take place later in the year. Microfiche or CD, software, and support will be supplied by FreeCEN and the Wales Coordinator.

Wales Coordinator
Thanks go to Allan, Barbara, Brian, Jim, Lynne, Mike & Phil, transcribers for the 1871 CMN FreeCEN project. We would really appreciate more volunteers to join the small team transcribing the 1871 Carmarthenshire census. Volunteers need only a computer and a little spare time; your chosen census piece CD, all necessary software and support will be supplied by FreeCEN, our supporters and the Wales Coordinator. A County Coordinator is needed for this project. Coordinators must have personal experience with FreeCEN transcription, and familiarity with the county. Coordinators are fully supported by the Regional Coordinator for Wales.

Thanks to Ann, Anne, Berwyn, Brenda, Bud, Carole, Charles, David, Dewi, Dick, Doreen & John, Dorothy, Elaine, Emma, Ian, Idwal, Jan, Jane, John, John, John & Shirley, Keith, Lesley, Margaret, Marg, Mary & Eddie, Marlene, Maureen, Peter, Peter, Ray, Ridge, Robert, Russell, Steffan, Sue, Susan, Susan, Tandy, Tom and William.
Checking & validation of 1891, 1871 and 1861 census pieces continues. Pieces are uploaded as they are finished and database updates occur monthly. The statistics page will always show which pieces were added in the most recent update. It is never too late to give us a hand! No fiche reader is needed; volunteers need only a computer and some spare time. 1861 or 1871 census pieces on CD are loaned to transcribers by supporters of the project; software and support are provided by FreeCEN and the County Coordinator. An example of the 1851 - 1871 spreadsheet is below for those who would like to see how different types of entry are handled. We still have some 1891 and 1871 pieces still unallocated, particularly in the Wrexham area. We can arrange to subdivide the larger remaining 1871 pieces into districts if that suits individuals with time limits. Transcribers for 1891 do need regular easy access to a fiche reader. If you would like more information please contact the County Coordinator
Sample Spreadsheet
The spreadsheet below is mainly fictional and includes many of the factors commonly found in the North Wales censuses. It is rare to find entries written in Welsh but it does happen and for the correct handling of those entries please refer to the Coordinator. The first 3 rows are essential and should not be removed or altered. It is not necessary to type in lower-case as I have done, but it is faster, and the conversion process prior to checking will insert uppercase letters wherever necessary. Feel free to use whichever mix you prefer. I recommend the use of a full-stop after abbreviations such as Robt., Eliz. or Llanfair D. C. and U.S.A. The first rule of transcription for us is "as is" - complete with mispelled names and places. If there is room for doubt you could offer an alternative in the Notes field (Col. Y). Remember that each transcript goes through the processes of checking, validation and post-validation prior to upload. If you want to leave longer notes a simple text file RG######.TXT with the piece number as the filename can be sent on with the data file. These notes will not be uploaded but will be available to the checker and validator.
