Profile
New Zealand born Maxine Jepson has spent her life exploring and discovering the potential of textiles to produce innovative and distinctive art forms. Maxine's career began as a freelance visual merchandiser, her creative and ground-breaking approach fuelled her passion and persistent attraction to textiles, fibres and form.
Inspired by these materials in 1986 Maxine created a new art form, soft calico sculpture. Through the method of draping, knitting, plaiting and folding she produced a range of sculptures, varying from masks to full length figures.
After Maxine's move to Australia in 1996 she continued her exploration of fibre art, developing a new direction towards stiffened calico gauze. This period produced masks and torsos with metallic, antique gold, verdi-gris copper, and bronze finishes.
Alongside her exploration of three-dimensional art Maxine produced collections of abstracted multi-media canvases and wall hangings. Directed by her evolving history absorbed in textiles, fibres and handmade papers she was naturally lead towards the wall hanging booklets, "La Petite Mémoire."
