Climbing

We have three really great and nationally recognised  climbing/bouldering areas in the greater Waikato area.

  • Piarere south east of Cambridge.

  • Wharepapa South in the south west of the waikato between Mangakino and Te Awamutu.

  • Whanaganui Bay on the western shores of Lake Taupo.

These areas are all privately owned and there are some restrictions on access (See Access issues below)

Theres untold other crags, bluffs and overhanging bits in all the mountain parks in the area plus a great small outdoor climbing wall at Pirongia for teaching rope skills to beginners. Get out there and have a look.

Living so close to three extinct volcano's is an advantage. I have Maungatautari on my back door, Pirongia and Karioi within an hours travel. Most of the rock in the waikato is therefore a decent wheathered ignimbrite. Of course I can also travel into the King country where there is a huge area of Karst with both open and enclosed climbing routes.

this page is still being designed in my head...
