GPS
Track, Monitor and Control
Here
at ITO Developments we like to create interesting and occasionally
useful devices.
A
new version of the VSD-E hardware to be available in 2009 that will
include modifications to provide for low and very low power consumption
(variable in relation to the installed micro code)
The
"Versatile SMS Device" (VSD) is something that we think falls into the "useful"
category being a unit that uses an embedded GSM module for compact
device (80mm x 50mm x 30mm) able to GPS Track, Monitor and Control by
way of receiving and sending text messages.

VSD-E with optional GPS Mouse
A
VSD is not designed for any specific application but is typically used
to monitor and/or control Alarms, or Equipment of some sort or tell you whatever
it is in your world that need to know about remotely, utilising the GSM cellular
network and SMS Text Messages or the Phone
Paging function which may mean zero cost monitoring (assumes call
from VSD not answered). A few
typical VSD Monitoring and Control application examples are:
-
Car,
Boat, House or building alarm/ignition on indicator
-
Appliance
control by sending a text message to turn a device on or off
-
Equipment
monitoring device that can be triggered by one or more external
events
-
Remote
monitoring
for an alarm where no phone line is available
-
A
backup alarm monitor should the normal phone line be faulty or
disconnected
-
Package
VSD with a PIR sensor and a battery, stick it in a box and you have
a portable alarm suitable for building sites and the like where no
permanent phone lines exist
-
Connect
to a remote transmitter/receiver pair (Oatleyelectronics) and use as
a personal alarm device
-
Basic
data capture or logging from an RS232 connected device (instead of GPS
mouse)
-
Passive
monitoring of input signals to determine their state
-
Rudimentary
alarm whereby a siren or output can be generated from an input
signal
The
VSD also supports the added feature of GPS tracking capability utilising
the optional GPS mouse receiver. Gone are the days of expensive GPS vehicle tracking systems. For
minimal cost you can have a device that when you send
it a SMS text message it will send back it's current longitude and latitude
coordinates. Useful if your car, boat (or whatever) has been stolen or if you just
want to track some item of interest without the overhead of a service based
system. Apply these coordinates to a suitable map,
mapping software or web sites such as wherearewe.co.nz
or maybe even Google Earth and the location of your vehicle or boat will be pin-pointed
within a few metres. There is also a basic Geofence
function that when enabled will alert you if the unit being monitored
has moved from its original location.
