Hunting is permitted all year round and generally free of royalties and fees

Thar from the Himalayas

Now days not many are left on public land. The range is fairly restricted to around Mt. Cook, where they where originally released. NZ is the only place in the world where they can be legally hunted. The best hunting is on some of the high country stations where they provide guides and excellent accommodation

This deer is widely disturbed through the country the different areas where stocked from different herds so the trophy standard varies

Elk are Only present in a restricted part of Fiordland National Park the elk interbreeds with red deer here so the heard is of mixed parentage.

Fallow Deer from European Game parks Occurs in limited areas in both islands locally quite common


Whitetail Deer from the Eastern US via European Game parks Occurs on Stewart Island and in one location near Queenstown


Wallabies (small Kangaroos ) these where introduced to provide a fur industry they have become agricultural pests where they can be hunted they are not native

Possums are a noxious pest in NZ A lot of effort is put into controlling them excellent sport can be had with a spotlight at night


Rabbits and Hares are also noxious pests they can be hunted by almost any means recently a virus (Rabbit Calacie Disease ) RCD has been illegally introduced in the hope of controlling rabbits the results so far have been mixed .
