KASK Rotorua Lakes Symposium 2003

On the weekend of the 21 - 23 of February, KASK organized a fantastic symposium in Rotorua. I was pleasantly shocked by how many home built kayaks where present. Of the 91 kayaks there, 16 where DIY 'ers. It highlights just how popular wooden boats are becoming.

The Three Main Construction Methods

In the foreground is a Strip Built kayak (builder unknown). Peter Oliver's Skin on Frame Bardarka is near the window, and Derek Wakeling's Stitch and Glue "Spike" is being discussed in the background.

"SPIKE"

A Sitch and Glue designed and built by Derek Wakeling. He has also made a double with the same design. The painted hull enhances the wood grain of the deck. The kayak preformed very well out in the water.

Stephens Selection

Stephen Justin is seriously addicted !!! He brought with him a CLC 16, CLC 17, a half built CLC and a Pygmy Osprey Triple. All where well made and the half built kayak enabled people to see the process of kayak building.

Bardarka

Peter Oliver's Bardarka is a very interesting vessel. It is made from a canvas skin stretched over a willow frame. Peter uses a traditional Aleut paddle. This produces a surprisingly fast combination.
