The Idea's Page

The only limit you have when building a kayak is your imagination. There is more than one way of building any of the three types of kayaks outlined in this site. It is recommended to follow the instructions supplied with the plans when you make your first kayak, but no one way of building is the only way. You have a lot of choices in how you scarf, epoxy, deck, varnish etc. your kayak. Once the shell is completed the sky's the limit with what accessories you want to make. This page will hopefully lead you away from thinking that "this is the best / only way" and help to open your mind to other techniques. I hope it also encourages readers to use a bit of ingenuity and invent useful kayaking accessories. A great example of this ingenuity is the recent development of using magnets instead of straps or bungees to attach hatch covers.

Don't forget to read the photo journals as these contain a mine of information, hints and ideas. If you need further help then this site can provide, or you wish to see if an idea is feasible before building, just post the question on the NZ Kayak Builders E-Goup
