How will the Diary help me ?
Gardeners have been aware for centuries of the effects the moon has on the growth of plants. A few people (Culpeper for instance) were aware of the influence of the zodiac signs. Today this knowledge is undergoing a type of renaissance as people delve through old records and find that many ideas and techniques which had fallen into disuse have a place in todays way of life. The Handy Diary gives the gardener the information necessary to plan activities on a month by month basis. Basically the trick is to sow and plant when the moon is both waxing and in a fertile sign and cultivate, weed and eradicate pests and disease when the moon is waning and in a barren sign. In addition to tables of the Zodiac Signs showing their characteristics which apply to the garden, two days each month have been highlighted as examples of optimal activities for that day .
Must I adhere strictly to these times?
Quite often it is impossible to work within the optimal times due to weather conditions or other commitments. Your plants will not fall over and die just because you were unable to plant them out on the most appropriate day. It is true, however, that they will tend to thrive more if this is the case. Try some experiments for yourself by sowing half your seeds on a “good” day and half on a “bad” day and see what happens.
Does all this actually work?
As with any aspect of gardening no one factor will ensure that results are foolproof. It is no use racing out to sow and plant just because the moon is both waxing and in a fertile sign if there is a 6” layer of snow on the ground. The knowledge should be used in conjunction with other factors such as soil temperature and climatic conditions
