Currently there are two such driver safety programmes based on the original
course developed in Sweden.
Both courses allow drivers to experience first hand the hazards of driving
in adverse conditions whilst in the complete safety of the vehicle. The training
vehicle is fitted with a computer controlled hydraulic frame connected to
"dolly" wheels on each of the four corners. The frame is able to simulate over and
understeer, low friction, metal, wet and even icy conditions as well as the
feeling of despair when faced with aquaplaning situations.
The emphasis throughout is to put the driver in touch with the vehicle so
that it's various behaviours, in a variety of situations, can
be identified for appropriate action to be taken in avoiding a crash.
Both courses are very effective. Anecdotal evidence supports this with
some companies reporting savings of up to $22000:00 in insurance premiums in
the first year following implementation of the programme.
A 1996 research report from Sweden relating to companies implementing the
programme supports this. The frequency of road crashes was monitored at
Televerket, (Swedish Telecom), with a sample group of 900 employees. The
group was subjected to various methods of crash prevention programmes
ie attitude-based discussions, a remunerative bonus system, driver
awareness publicity campaigns and driver training. The results
overwhelmingly supported the driver training and attitude based peer
discussions. The crash reduction and risk was reduced by 47.9% per 10,000
km's during the trial period whilst the crash costs decreased by a
staggering 33% per 10,000 km's.
The consequences of a motorvehicle crash to any business are considerable
such as employee injury, compensation action, work days lost, OSH legal
action and in many instances, loss of life. Add to this a
depleted motorvehicle fleet affecting operational requirements and loss of
productivity.
Both courses are "competency based" requiring the participant to meet pre-set
standards before progressing to the next level of training. The programme
has been operating within New Zealand since 1987 and currently operates in
several locations including Australia. The Programme also
operates within a number of essential services including the Royal New
Zealand Police College, the Australian Federal Police, the St. John
Ambulance and the Royal Australian Army.
To date more than 12,000 drivers have graduated from these courses.

MMI Corporate Fleet Risk Management Programme
Introduction
The MMI Corporate Fleet Risk Management Programme has been developed in
response to an ongoing call from the commercial sector seeking a solution
to losses associated with road crashes theft and other damage.
The programme reviews existing company procedures in discussion with those
responsible for purchasing and maintaining motorvehicle fleets. An
opportunity is provided to modify and/or formalise company policies and
procedures with specific emphasis on OSH and other legislative
requirements. The attitude training session for staff involved in driving
company fleet vehicles then highlights and reinforces these policies and
procedures in terms of individual accountability and responsibility.
Training is conducted on-site using a professionally produced video and an
overhead projector presentation. The training session is supported by participant workbooks and
interactive discussion.
The programme provides a cost effective solution to corporate fleet
management by introducing proven and up to date processes and procedures
in conjunction with the training of staff and the opportunity to provide regular
reviews of the effectiveness of the programme.
