What is the Feldenkrais® Method?
The Feldenkrais® Method is a form of sensory motor education. It helps to restore proprioception (joint position sense) and coordinated movement, by combining normal movement principles with learning principles. This leads to improved function and reduced tension and pain. Functional improvement can be anything from learning to breathe more easily and balance more comfortably in your wheelchair, to walking.
With the help of the practitioner, you learn to become more aware of how you are moving and what might be hindering your movement. Through this process, you develop new and easier ways of moving. Many of the movements are based on functional activities such as feeding yourself, rolling over in bed, or sitting comfortably in your wheelchair.
Special features of the method:
- The movements are pleasurable; pain and strain are counterproductive to learning.
- The focus is on learning, not exercises, so new movements become part of your repertoire.
- The focus is also on learning to learn. This means you can apply your learning in your own time.
- The method improves everyday functioning; it does more than make you feel good.
- It is responsive to individual needs so anyone can do it, regardless of severity of injury.
