If this was a personal diary, it would say more about what I currently think about what’s going on in my life, that I currently keep bottled up inside me and worry about. It’s not though, so it’s really more of a journal of what’s happened to me.
As I seem to be quite good at, I’m going to start with now and work backwards for this entry.
Mother Nature is showing off tonight. After a beautiful warm, sunny day, we’re getting a wind that will make sure there are no dead leaves left on the trees. I can tell because it’s blowing leaves down the road above the level of the street lights.
Once again, I ‘wasted’ time today by finishing reading Metropolitan by Walter Jon Williams, when I probably should have been doing the housework, and going to the supermarket. As it is, I used up all the coffee this morning, so I’ll either have to have instant at work, or make do with my chocolate-covered coffee beans instead. I’ve just reread the notes on the cover of Metropolitan, and I’m wondering whether whoever wrote them read the same book I did.
I went along to the Dux last night to see what sort of music thay had on, but mainly to watch the important rugby game between Canterbury and New South Wales. The music wasn’t really to my taste, but the game was good, with Canterbury getting better in the second half to win quite convincingly; and well enough to get into the semi-finals.
I also went to the Dux on Friday night, with Paul and Keryn from work. That was supposed to be to watch the rugby too, but it ended up being mostly some interesting discussions between us. What I mostly remember is Keryn telling me about how I’d know when I found the right girl for me. At the moment I seem to feel that I’d probably manage not to notice, which is a remarkably depressing outlook, actually.
Finally, I got this Thursday and Friday off work. It’s not quite as good as it sounds, since I was doing jury service at the District Court. While it was interesting, I don’t really want to do it again in a hurry. I’m glad the case wasn’t anything too serious; just receiving a stolen vehicle, rather than any kind of violent crime. The jury found the defendent guilty, so I’ll have to keep an eye on the newspaper to find out what happens in the end.
Wow. I managed to go almost two weeks without adding anything here. That’s pretty bad. I haven’t actually got much at all accomplished over the last two weeks. However, things have been a little more eventful very recently, so I should be able to write a reasonable amount today.
I went along to Coyote’s bar last night (Friday) for Dean Johnson’s celebrations for leaving his job to go to the U.K. I had quite a bit to drink and ended up leaving the Boulevard, where everyone shifted to, at about 1:30 this morning. Dean was still going strong when I left.
I found out that Sarah has gotten herself a ‘real’ job in Wellington, which is going to be a bit of a problem at work. She seems to be looking forward to quitting just a little too much. I wonder if I’ll get asked to fill in on weekends, on the basis that I should still be able to remember how to do the job since it’s only a bit more than two years since I was doing her job. Monday should be interesting.
Tomorrow, Sunday, will also be interesting, or something. The final of the Rugby Super-12’s is on Sky TV tomorrow afternoon, so I’ll have to find a bar to watch it from. I hope the Crusaders win, but I really have no idea which is the better team.
That’s about it, I guess. I’ll try to update this page with whatever happens over the next few days.
I just got back from the Dux, where I was watching the Canterbury Crusaders win the Super-12’s final against the Otago Highlanders. Both teams played well, but the Crusaders’ game improved in the second half, as usual, and Otago just couldn’t keep up.
Unfortunately, that combined with sleeping in until 12:00 hasn’t left me with much of Sunday to do anything else.
So what has been happening over the last few days, anyway?
Sarah brought a delicious chocolate cake into work for everyone when she came in to resign on Monday, which was terribly bad for me, as I predicted. She’s off to Wellington on Sunday.
Tasha was somehow talked into helping out at work, when she whould be writing up the report for her final University project. She’s off to Dunedin on Friday for a second interview with Fisher & Paykel, so maybe she’ll be getting a real job.
And I’ve been in my current job for nearly two and a half years, which is getting a bit depressing. I’m thinking that I need a change in my life; I guess the last big thing I did was buying my apartment. I don’t think I can just sit around and wait for something to happen to me either; I need to do something.
Oh well. I’ll finish up on that note tonight, since I’ve still got other things to do.
You’d think that with the long weekend, I would have managed to update this, but no, I was slack and worked on other stuff, like sleeping in until 11 am or later each day.
I actually did quite a bit of stuff besides that last weekend. I spent a lot of time on Sunday with my parents, riding one of the four-person bikes that you can hire at the Arts Center faster and in different locations than I think most of the tourists ride it.
On Friday night, slightly to my surprise, I managed to stay out until 2:30 am on Saturday morning, which probably helped me to sleep in all weekend. I can’t really remember doing all that much on Saturday, but I guess that’s OK.
And yesterday, as well as sleeping in, I walked down to Riccarton Mall to go window shopping, for cell-phones in particular. Having decided that it would be nice to have one, especially given the amount of time the computer is connected to the Internet and not letting me call out, I have to decide which company, which phone and which payment plan to go with. Decisions, decisions.
I also found a very nice surprise on top of my letterbox when I got home, which gave me a nice warm feeling. Actually, that might have been because I’d just walked quickly back from Riccarton Mall with my jacket on...
Anyway, I’ve got things still to do tonight, while I’m in an annoyingly positive mood, so that’s all.
It’s been a while, so I’ve got a few things to catch up on. First of all, I went to see Star Wars I on Sunday 13, and although it was a good movie with great special effects, I was a little disappointed, especially by the way it just seemed to move from one scene to another without anything really linking them. But instead of filling this entry up with my attempts to have an opinion, I’ll just include pointers to two article that I agree with: David Brin’s article in Salon (and some others there), and the Abridged Menace. Both of these contain spoilers; you’ve been warned.
In my opinion, The Matrix and The Fifth Element were both better SF films than The Phantom Menace.
Anyway, seeing as how it wasn’t that good, I shouldn’t really be giving Star Wars so much space. I’m probably better off going over the CDs I want to buy to help line the pockets of advertising company executives. I’ve already bought two Pink Floyd albums, and there’s one more that I’d like to get, Momentary Lapse of Reason. This would make it three CDs, which is more than I have from any other artist, and I only bought the first in February.
I also want to get the second album from the Cardigans. I think I’ve held off on this because my brother bought it first, and despite having similar musical tastes I don’t like to actually admit it by buying the same CDs. Finally, I think I’ll have to get the new album from Catatonia, just to keep my collection intact, and because I do think Cerys Matthews has a wonderful voice.
I still haven’t bought a cellphone yet, and now the price of the one I was looking at has gone up. I still think I’ll buy it though, it seems to be quite a popular brand. It’s the one that Tasha’s bought, now that she’s got herself a real job at Fisher and Paykel.
And that last point is about all I have to say now, because it’s getting late and it’s about time I went to bed.
