I’m not especially touchy about my name. It is a bit unusual though, so this page is here to make sure people have the right information about it.
In fact, I like having a distinctive name. I just sometimes wish I didn’t always have to correct the spelling or pronunciation. It’s not as bad as having people think my name’s ‘Corey’, though.
‘Carey’ is pronounced to rhyme with ‘Mary’, or much like ‘Kerry’. In IPA terms, it’s pronounced /ˈkɛəriː/.
In this case, it’s a male name. I do realise it isn’t always — I knew a girl called Carey (who pronounced it differently), but I’ve known another guy with the same first name too.
It’s not just a surname. It might have been originally, but there’s plenty of people using it as their first name.
I know there are a few other people on the Internet with the name Carey Evans. I’ve only seen myself from New Zealand, so that would be a safe assumption for now if you come across another one.
To make things slightly more confusing, the name ‘Carey Evans’ itself is also a surname. In particular, there’s Sir Thomas Carey Evans, who was personal physician to the Viceroy of India at one time, and his wife Olwen Carey Evans, who was one of the daughters of David Lloyd George, Prime Minister of the UK from 1916 to 1922.
