THE GATHERING

        The leader of the gathering is responsible for assembling the community.  "The Eucharist can take place only when believers are gathered together in the name of Christ and in the power of the Spirit.  They are not always nor automatically there.  They have to gather there in such a way that they form a Christian assembly" [N.Darragh].
We need to avoid making the gathering rite too wordy!

[ The Eucharist can take place only when believers are gathered together in the name of Jesus Christ and in the power of God's holy Spirit.
Avoid an over-wordy gathering rite.
]

gathering rite:

Opening Hymn or Entrance Psalm.

(a) Greeting & Welcome to People:
( This may include an invocation of the Trinity)
(b) Naming of any special characteristics of the day:
( eg. which Sunday of the Year, special season, feast-day, of the readings - if there is one. )
(c) Communal Opening Prayer: ( which may take various forms.)

A Penitential Rite form   ( I confess . . , or the "Lord, have mercy litany," with penitential-style invocations [ See Prayers of the Mass].)

Some other song of praise to God

Some other hymn or chant which has the effect of gathering people into the presence of God. ( eg. the chant "Gather us, O God.")

a blessing & sprinkling with water
( The Asperges [ See: Prayers of the Mass ] )

( Note: In all the above cases, the leader needs to tell the congregation: which form is going to be used on this day.  If some, or all, of the Communal Gathering Prayer is to be sung, the leader needs to work in close liaison with choir / organist or cantor.)

SAMPLE   Litany form ( for Advent time )

The season of Advent challenges us
to see God's vision of what is yet to be,
to hear God's voice calling anew,
to smell the scent of God in our world: . . ,

Voice 1:
The spirit of God is among us,
breaking down old barriers
building a new world.
Prepare a way for the coming of God:

ALL:
PREPARE A WAY FOR THE COMING OF GOD.

Voice 2:
The Spirit of God is among us,
seeking out truth new and old,
creating a just world.
Prepare a way for the coming of God.

ALL:
PREPARE A WAY FOR THE COMING OF GOD.

Voice 3:
The Spirit of God is among us,
moving in the air, the land and the waters,
making our world whole.
making our world whole.
Prepare a way for the coming of God.

ALL:
PREPARE A WAY FOR THE COMING OF GOD.

Leader:
Be among us now, O holy Spirit of God.
Bring us to wholeness & peace.
Bring to birth among us,
the One who is God-with-us

intercessions:

[ The intercessions have the following outline:

  • A brief opening invitation to pray by the leader;
  • Two or three intentions offered by the leader. Where these are taken from a book, the most appropriate ones for that day should be chosen, especially those which relate the the readings or homily;
  • An invitation to the congregation to offer their own intentions. It is helpful if these can be organised to some extent beforehand;
  • If there are special events in the community or special needs for prayer which have not so far been mentioned, the leader could well introduce such intentions here;
  • A concluding prayer by the leader. ]

Reflection:

[ A brief reflection which links the liturgy of the Word with the liturgy of the Eucharist. It seeks to clarify the significance of these texts for life beyond the liturgical assembly. Hearing of the Word of God when the scriptures are read & experiencing the Presence of God in the action of the Eucharistic Prayer, reinforces the unity of the "good news" for the practise of discipleship. ]
